The measures will focus primarily on internationally renowned destinations such as Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Puerto Morelos, and Mahahual, where tourism serves as one of the principal drivers of the local economy. Maintaining clean and attractive beaches is considered essential to preserving the global competitiveness of these destinations, which welcome millions of visitors from around the world each year.
The sargassum phenomenon has intensified considerably in recent years, and 2026 is expected to be one of the most challenging seasons on record. Forecasts indicate that Quintana Roo’s coastline could receive unprecedented volumes of the macroalgae, driven by factors including rising ocean temperatures, increased nutrient availability, and favorable marine currents. These conditions have prompted authorities to significantly strengthen both prevention and cleanup efforts in anticipation of another severe season.
Beyond its obvious visual impact on beaches, sargassum poses serious environmental challenges. When large accumulations remain onshore for several days, the seaweed begins to decompose, releasing gases that generate unpleasant odors and degrade air quality. It also reduces sunlight penetration into coastal waters, damaging seagrass meadows and coral reefs while disrupting the balance of fragile marine ecosystems. These environmental effects ultimately impact a wide range of marine species and threaten the long-term health of coastal habitats.
From an economic perspective, the large-scale arrival of sargassum imposes substantial costs on public authorities, tourism businesses, and hotels, all of which must allocate significant resources to continuous cleanup operations in order to keep beaches in acceptable condition. Restaurants, tour operators, and local businesses are likewise affected when deteriorating coastal conditions discourage visitors. For this reason, offshore interception is widely regarded as one of the most efficient strategies for reducing cleanup costs while minimizing the impact on tourism activity.
The strategy also calls for close coordination among federal, state, and municipal authorities, together with the active participation of the hotel industry and environmental management organizations. This collaborative approach is expected to optimize available resources and enhance the region’s ability to respond effectively during periods of particularly heavy seaweed accumulation.
At the same time, authorities continue to support research into sustainable alternatives that would enable sargassum to be utilized as a raw material for a variety of industrial applications, thereby reducing the environmental impact associated with its removal and disposal. Nevertheless, the primary objective remains preventing the seaweed from reaching the shoreline and safeguarding one of Latin America’s most important tourism destinations.
Through this historic investment, Quintana Roo aims to establish a more effective and proactive strategy against a phenomenon that has become one of the Mexican Caribbean’s greatest environmental and economic challenges. By strengthening monitoring systems, expanding its specialized marine fleet, and increasing the deployment of containment barriers, the state seeks to protect both its natural environment and its tourism industry—two fundamental pillars of the region’s long-term economic prosperity.
