Egypt hits 14.4 million visitors and eyes the 2030 goal
21-10-2026
Egypt welcomed 14.4 million international visitors during the first nine months of 2026, 4 per cent more than in the same period last year. The figure, released this week, reinforces the image of a destination that is recovering with a steady step and aspires to become one of the great tourism powers of the eastern Mediterranean and the Red Sea.
The number gains further weight when set against the close of 2025, when the country hosted 19 million foreign visitors, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council. That body estimates that the sector contributed 34.4 billion dollars to the Egyptian economy that year. From that starting point, the government has set an ambitious target: 30 million visitors a year by 2030, a goal that will demand sustained growth and a marked expansion of hosting capacity.
Accommodation is precisely one of the fronts on which most work is under way. Egypt currently has around 240,000 hotel rooms and intends to double that figure in the coming years. The development pipeline includes close to 35,000 additional rooms, with increasingly visible investment in luxury properties, a segment the country wants to strengthen in order to attract higher-spending travellers without giving up the mass leisure tourism that has always underpinned its economy.
