Spain breaks its record for tourists and spending in August
04-10-2026
Spain has closed a historic August for its tourism industry. According to official statistics published this week, the country welcomed 12.3 million international tourists during the month, 9.2% more than in the same period a year earlier. Spending by those travellers reached 17.838 billion euros, with an identical percentage rise, confirming that the high season has been the strongest in the series and keeping the country among the great tourism powers of the planet.
The cumulative balance for the first eight months of the year reinforces that impression. Between January and August, 70.36 million foreign visitors arrived on Spanish territory, 5.4% more than a year before, while total spending came close to 100 billion euros, specifically 99.892 billion, an increase of 8%. The fact that money is growing faster than arrivals indicates that each tourist leaves, on average, more resources at the destination, a nuance of particular relevance to those who defend a model based on value rather than volume alone.
Average outlay per traveller in August stood at 1,455 euros, while daily spending per person was 202 euros, 1.9% higher than twelve months earlier. The most common length of stay was between four and seven nights, a duration that allows visitors to combine rest, gastronomy and leisure and that benefits a broad range of businesses, from accommodation and restaurants to shops, local transport and activity providers.
