United states maintains passport validity requirements for travelers

Planning a trip to the United States requires close attention to a document that can shape the journey before a traveler even reaches the airport: the passport. U.S. authorities continue to require many foreign visitors to hold a passport valid for at least six months beyond their intended departure date, a condition that remains essential for avoiding complications during boarding or immigration checks.

The rule is based on a preventive approach. By requiring an additional period of validity, it is intended to ensure that travelers retain a valid document throughout their stay, even if their itinerary changes because of an emergency, a flight disruption, illness or another unforeseen circumstance. In international travel, this requirement is common and may apply differently depending on the destination country, the traveler’s nationality and the type of travel authorization being used.
